News: The pilgrimage town of Chitrakoot in Madhya Pradesh has been inundated after torrential rainfall over the past 14 hours caused the Mandakini River to overflow.
About Mandakini River
- Mandakini River flows through two states, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.
- It is also known as Paisuani River.
- Origin: It originates from Khillora hills in Majhgawan block in Satna district of Madhya Pradesh .
- Course of river: It flows through Chitrakoot before forming the boundary between Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.
- It passes the perennial springs at Sati Anusuiya, and eventually joins the Yamuna River near Rajapur in Uttar Pradesh.
- Watershed area: Its total watershed area is 1956.3 sq. km.
- Tributary of: It is the tributary of Yamuna River.
- Importance: The river is a lifeline for Chitrakoot and nearby areas, with nearly 70 per cent of residents depending on it.
- Chitrakoot is well known for its close association with epic, the Ramayana.
- Overflooding: Recently, Chitrakoot has been badly affected by heavy rainfall, causing the Mandakini River to overflow.
- Important religious places, including Arogyadham, Gupt Godavari and the Satib Anusuya area, have also been affected by the rising water.
