News: At the 64th session of the UNFCCC Subsidiary Bodies (SB64), India agenda involves items such as discussion on the Global Goal on Adaptation, the Just Transition Work Programme and the Global Stocktake, alongside climate finance and the contested future of the Sharm el-Sheikh Mitigation Work Programme (MWP).
About Mitigation Work Programme
- Led by: The Mitigation Work Programme (MWP) is a process established under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
- Establishment: It was originally proposed by the United States at COP26 (2021) and formally established at COP27 in Sharm el-Sheikh (2022).
- Aim: It has been designed to push countries to close the gap between current emissions trajectories and the temperature goals of the Paris Agreement.
- Purpose: Its purpose is to help countries scale up their mitigation ambition and implementation to achieve the 1.5°C goal of the Paris Agreement.
- Objective:
- Generate discussions that are facilitative, constructive, innovative, and catalytic
- Ensure a diversity of participation, including by policymakers and implementers
- Explore, elucidate, and highlight the greatest, most cost-effective and scalable mitigation opportunities/ potential
- Enable practical pathways to help countries implement their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and identify scope for enhanced action,
- track progress against commitments made by Parties and non-Party stakeholders (NPS) outside of formal multilateral process
- address issues of equity and sustainable development
- explore synergies with adaptation
- Note: The MWP does not impose new targets on individual countries and its outputs are not meant to result in new obligations.
