News: The NSO has released key indicators and findings of the first-ever all-India National Household Travel Survey through a Factsheet.
About National Household Travel Survey (NHTS), 2025–26

- Conducted by: It was conducted by the National Statistics Office (NSO) under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI).
- Duration: It was conducted from July 2025 to June 2026.
- It is the inaugural edition of this survey.
- Survey Coverage: The survey covered rural and urban areas across the country.
- For the purpose of the survey, a trip is defined as travel covering a distance of more than 1 km.
- It collected information from over 4.9 lakh households and more than 20 lakh persons.
- Aim: Its primary aim is to generate data-driven insights into domestic travel to support regional transport planning, infrastructure development and evidence-based policy formulation.
- Key Highlights:
- Four Central Aspects: The survey findings focus on four central aspects of travel –
- Mobility
- Duration and peak hours
- Expenditure involved
- Overnight and non-work travel.
- Mobility: Two-wheelers are the predominant mode of transport for commuting to fixed workplaces, accounting for 42.6% of workers.
- Duration: Around 87.6% of students reach educational institutions within 30 minutes, while 83.4% of workers reach their fixed workplaces within 30 minutes.
- Expenditure: The average monthly expenditure on commuting to a fixed workplace is ₹785 per worker, with urban workers spending ₹1,044 and rural workers ₹612.
- Overnight and Non-work Travel: Buses are the predominant mode for overnight trips, which are primarily undertaken for social and religious purposes.
