About National Technology Day

- National Technology Day: It is observed on May 11 every year to commemorate India’s technological achievements and honour scientists and innovators.
- Origin: The day marks the successful nuclear tests conducted at Pokhran on May 11, 1998, which showcased India’s scientific excellence and capabilities.
- Aim: The celebration aims to encourage innovation, promote indigenous technologies, support research, and honour innovators contributing to national development.
- Organizing Body: It is primarily organised by the Technology Development Board, a statutory body under the Department of Science and Technology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India.
- Theme 2026: The theme for this year is ‘Responsible Innovation for Inclusive Growth’.
- Key Features:
- Recognition of Scientists: The day honours scientists and innovators who contributed to India’s technological progress and national pride.
- Promotion of Indigenous Technology: The celebrations highlighted cost-effective indigenous technologies that provide solutions suitable for Indian needs.
- Technology Awards: National Awards carrying Rs. 10 lakh and a trophy each are instituted by the Technology Development Board to recognise excellence in commercialization of indigenous technologies.
- Category A: The award is given for successful commercialization of indigenous technology.
- Category B: The award is presented for successful technology commercialization by MSMEs.
- Category C: The award recognises excellence in technology start-ups.
