News: Four traditional crops of Madhya Pradesh have received the Geographical Indication (GI) Tag, providing legal recognition to their authenticity, quality, and traditional agricultural heritage.

  • Four traditional crops of Madhya Pradesh have received the Geographical Indication (GI) Tag.
  • They are Sitahi Kutki (Sitahi Minor Millet), Nagdaman Kutki (Nagdaman Minor Millet), Baigani Arhar (Dindori Pigeon Pea), and Mahakoshal Chhatriya Chawal (Chhatriya Paddy).
    • Sitahi Kutki and Nagdaman Kutki (Minor Millets):
      • Location: These traditional minor millet varieties are cultivated in the Dindori region of Madhya Pradesh.
      • Tribal Association: The Baiga and Gond tribes have preserved their native seeds for generations and have mainly cultivated them for self-consumption.
      • Key Features: These varieties are naturally organic and climate-resilient.
        • They are rich in dietary fibre, complex carbohydrates, antioxidants, and essential minerals such as iron, potassium, and magnesium.
        • They also have a low Glycemic Index.
      • Importance: Their high nutritional value and climate resilience make them important traditional crops with strong health benefits.
    • Baigani Arhar (Dindori Pigeon Pea):
      • Location: Baigani Arhar originates from the Dindori region.
      • Tribal Association: It is deeply linked with the heritage of the Baiga tribe and is cultivated using traditional organic practices.
      • Key Features: It has high natural protein content, a distinct sweet flavour.
        • It has a shorter maturation cycle (5–6 months)
          , and requires less cooking time.
        • Importance: It is valued for its high nutritional content, including dietary fibre, iron, calcium, and B-complex vitamins.
    • Mahakoshal Chhatriya Chawal (Chhatriya Paddy):
      • Location: This traditional rice variety originates from Jabalpur and Katni districts.
      • Key Features: It is known for its distinct aroma, taste, local adaptability, and retains its bran layer with vitamin B1(thiamine), minerals, and healthy fats.
      • Importance: The crop is recognised for its culinary excellence and balanced nutritional profile.
