News: NSE Indices launched the Nifty 500 Ahimsa Index to track the performance of companies from the Nifty 500 universe.

  • It is a new benchmark designed to track the performance of companies from the Nifty 500 universe whose business practices are aligned with the principles of non-violence (Ahimsa).
  • Objective: It aims to track the performance of Nifty 500 stocks that are selected based on the principles of Ahimsa (non-violence).
    • It seeks to provide a benchmark for investors who wish to invest in companies with ethical and animal-friendly business practices.
  • The index includes companies that do not intentionally engage in activities that harm animals during the course of their business operations.
  • Launched by: The index has been launched by NSE Indices, a subsidiary of the National Stock Exchange (NSE).
  • Developed by: It has been developed in collaboration with the Ahimsagain Foundation using its Ahimsa Investment Movement (AIM) Framework.
  • Framework: It is based on the Ahimsa Investment Movement (AIM) Framework.
    • It has been developed by the Ahimsagain Foundation, evaluates listed companies on the basis of their products, services, and business practices.
    • The framework determines whether companies comply with the principles of non-violence (Ahimsa).
    • Company Classification: The Ahimsagain Foundation classifies companies into Green, Orange, and Red categories.
      • Only companies classified under the Green category are eligible for inclusion in the index.
      • Companies classified under the Orange and Red categories are excluded from the index.
  • Eligibility Criteria
    • Only stocks that are part of the Nifty 500 Index at the time of review are eligible for inclusion.
    • Eligible companies are selected from the Green category in accordance with the prescribed index methodology.
  • Weightage Methodology
    • The weight of each stock in the index is determined on the basis of its free-float market capitalization.
  • Base Date and Base Value: The index has a base date of 1 April 2016 and a base value of 1000.
  • Review Frequency: The composition of the index is reviewed semi-annually, with reviews conducted in March and September.
  • Companies included: The Nifty 500 Ahimsa Index comprises 326 stocks across a diverse set of sectors.
    • Automobile and auto components account for the largest share at 13.05 per cent, followed by capital goods (12.20 per cent), information technology (11.80 per cent) and financial services (10.35 per cent).
    • Other sectors represented in the index include metals and mining, telecommunication, power, oil, gas and consumable fuels, construction materials, consumer durables, healthcare, and services, among others.
    • The top constituents by weight are Bharti Airtel, Infosys, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd, Tata Consultancy Services, Maruti Suzuki India, NTPC, BSE, Tata Steel, Hindalco Industries and Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone.
