• Ocean Research Vessel (ORV) Sagar Manthan is an all-weather, multidisciplinary ocean research vessel.
• Nodal Ministry: It has been developed under the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES).
• User Agency: The National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR) will use the vessel.
• Builder: The vessel is designed, engineered and constructed by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Limited (GRSE), Kolkata.
• Mission Link: It has been constructed under Vertical-4 (Deep Ocean Survey and Exploration) of the Deep Ocean Mission (DOM).
• Replacement: It will gradually replace the 43-year-old ORV Sagar Kanya, procured from Germany in 1983.
• Key Features:
  • Advanced Equipment: It has dynamic positioning, multibeam bathymetry, seismic systems, sub-bottom profiling.
    • It also has deployment facilities for Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) and Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs).
  • Research Capabilities: It will support mineral exploration, environmental baseline studies, atmospheric observations and Conductivity, Temperature and Depth (CTD) profiling.
• Extreme Operations: It is designed to operate in extreme oceanic environments, including the Southern Ocean.
• Service Life: The vessel has a projected service life of 30 years.
• Project Cost: The vessel has been constructed at an approximate cost of ₹840 crore and is scheduled for commissioning in 2028.
