About Operation Upstream

- Operation Upstream : It is an initiative that focuses on identifying and targeting the supply chains responsible for producing and moving prohibited performance-enhancing drugs.
- Launched by:The operation is conducted with support from World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), along with INTERPOL and EUROPOL.
- Objective: The main objective is to curb doping by targeting supply chains that help in moving prohibited substances.
- Key Aspects:
- Approach: The strategy follows a “top to down” approach by focusing on suppliers and networks instead of only athletes, as athletes are considered victims.
- Supply Chain Focus: The method aims to attack the movement of prohibited substances, especially given the large population and scale of the issue.
- Intelligence-Based Action: Greater emphasis is placed on intelligence gathering because doping has become organized and sophisticated, requiring action from different sides.
- Global Enforcement Actions: The operation has led to 250 raids, seizure of approximately 1.8 billion doses, and closure of 88 illegal laboratories across 20 countries.
