News: Torrential rainfall in Kerala’s Pathanamthitta district caused the Pampa River to overflow its banks, leading to widespread flooding in Ranni, Aranmula, Kozhencherry and Cherukolpuzha.
About Pampa River
- It is the third longest west flowing river of Kerala (after Periyar & Bharathapuzha).
- It is also known as Pamba River.
- It is known as the ‘Dakshina Bhageerathi’ or the Ganga of Kerala.
- Origin and course of the river: It originates at an elevation of 1,650 m in the Pulachimalai Hills on the Peerumedu Plateau of the Western Ghats.
- It flows westward and empties into the Arabian Sea through multiple distributary channels.
- River basin: The river basin is bounded by the Western Ghats in the east and the Arabian Sea in the west.
- Catchment area: Its entire catchment basin lies within Kerala.
- Tributaries: Its main tributaries are Kakki Ar, Azhuta Ar, Kakkad Ar, Kallar, Manimala, and Achenkovil.
- Dam constructed on river: Pamba Dam was constructed in Pampa River in 1967.
- Religious significance: Sabarimala temple is located on the upper catchment area of the Pamba River.
