News: A monsoon bird survey recorded 124 bird species at Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary, including several Western Ghats endemic and rare species.
About Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary
- Location: Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary is a protected area located in the Western Ghats of Thiruvananthapuram district of Kerala.
- It an integral part of the UNESCO-designated Agasthyamala Biosphere Reserve, which also includes the Shendurney and Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuaries.
- It was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1983.
- Boundaries: Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary is bordered by the Kalakkad-Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve of Tamil Nadu in the northeast, Palode Reserve Forest in the north, and Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary in the south.
- Topography: The sanctuary has dense forests and rugged terrain and covers an area of over 53 sq. km.
- Vegetation: The sanctuary contains several types of forests, including tropical evergreen, semi-evergreen, moist mixed deciduous and Myristica swamp forests.
- Highest Point: The Chemmunjimottai (1,717 m) is the highest peak in the sanctuary, followed by Athirumalai (1,594 m).
- River & Dam: The sanctuary includes the catchment area of the Peppara Dam, which was constructed across the Karamana River.
- Flora: Its tree diversity includes species such as Terminalia paniculata, Terminalia bellerica, Pterocarpus marsupium, Palaquium ellipticum, Mesua ferrea, Hopea parviflora and Bombax ceiba.
- Fauna: The sanctuary supports mammals such as the Asian elephant, tiger, leopard, sloth bear, sambar, barking deer, lion-tailed macaque, Nilgiri langur and Nilgiri tahr.
