  • Prime Minister Research Chair (PMRC) Scheme  is a flagship initiative that seeks to connect global Indian talent with India’s research, development, innovation and technology ecosystem.
  • Launched by: It has been launched by the Department of Higher Education under the Ministry of Education.
  • Aim: The scheme aims to attract accomplished Indian-origin researchers, scientists, technologists and professionals from leading global institutions and connect them with India’s rapidly expanding research and innovation ecosystem.
  • Key Features:
    • Three-Pillar Structure: The scheme is built around Lead Institutions, Host Institutions and PMRC Fellows.
      • Lead Institutions: Seven lead institutions have been identified, namely IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, IIT Madras, IIT Kanpur, IIT Hyderabad, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad and IISc Bengaluru.
      • Host Institutions: Eligible host institutions include government higher educational institutions ranked among the Top 100 in National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) Overall or Engineering categories or Top 50 in the NIRF Research category.
        • National laboratories and research institutions under agencies such as Department of Science and Technology (DST), Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), and Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) are also eligible.
      • Fellows: Accomplished Indian-origin researchers, scientists, technologists and professionals, including Indian nationals working abroad, Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholders, and Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs).
    • Selection: The selection process is overseen by an Empowered Committee chaired by the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India.
    • Priority Research Areas: The scheme focuses on 13 national priority sectors, including artificial intelligence, quantum computing, semiconductors, cybersecurity, healthcare, biotechnology, climate change, defence and atomic energy.
    • Research Support: Selected fellows will receive fellowship support, research grants, access to laboratories and advanced research infrastructure.
