News: As a precautionary measure, the Municipal Council of Poonch, Jammu & Kashmir, has relocated municipal solid waste away from the Poonch River to prevent it from entering the river during the monsoon season.
About the Poonch River

- It is a snow-fed perennial river which flows through Jammu and Kashmir in India and Pakistan-administered Kashmir.
- It is also known as Punch River, Punch Tohi, and Tohi of Punch.
- Origin: It originates in the south-facing foothills of Pir Panjal range, in the areas of Neel-Kanth Gali and Jamian Gali. It is called ‘Siran’ (Suran) in this area.
- It flows south and then west until it reaches the town of Poonch, after which it bends southwest, finally draining into the Mangla Reservoir near Chomukh.
- Tributary of: It is a tributary of the Jhelum River.
- Tributaries: The prominent tributaries of the river are Mandi, Nimbal Katha, Darungli , Betaar, Ranguri and Rangar.
- Dam: The Gulpur Hydropower Plant is a key dam project located on the Poonch River.
- It is also known as a breeding ground for some endangered Mahaseer species and also provides habitat for several indigenous and exotic fish species.
