  • Prime Minister’s National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (PM-NAPS) is a Government of India scheme launched in 2016 to promote apprenticeship training through financial support to establishments.
  • Extension: It has been extended for FY 2026–27 to strengthen apprenticeship opportunities in the North-Eastern Region under the Special Intervention for Promotion of Apprenticeship.
  • Objective: The scheme aims to develop skilled manpower through on-the-job training, encourage establishments to engage apprentices, provide up-skilling opportunities, and increase apprenticeship participation in MSMEs and underserved regions such as the North-East.
  • Implemented by: The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) implements PM-NAPS.
    • The FY 2026–27 special intervention in the North-Eastern Region will be implemented by the Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship (IIE), Guwahati.
  • Legal backing: The scheme provides financial incentives to establishments engaging apprentices under the Apprentices Act, 1961.
  • Key features:
    • Financial support: The scheme provides financial incentives to establishments through partial stipend support for apprentices.
    • Stipend support: Government shares 25% of the minimum prescribed stipend, subject to a maximum of ₹1,500 per apprentice per month, through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) mechanism.
    • Industry-focused training: The scheme promotes industry-aligned, paid on-the-job training to bridge the gap between education and employment.
    • Certificate benefit: Candidates receive a NAPS certificate after completing training, which improves their employability.
    • Inclusive approach: The scheme encourages participation from MSMEs, women, marginalized communities, and underserved regions, including the North-East.
