About Salal Hydroelectric Project
- Location: The Salal Hydroelectric Project is located in the Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir.
- Timeline: The project planning started in the 1960s, construction began in 1970, and commercial operation started in 1987.
- River System: The project is built on the Chenab River and harnesses its hydropower potential.
- Developed and Owned by: The project is developed and owned by the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC).
- Type: The project is a 690 MW run-of-the-river hydropower project with Stage-I and Stage-II, each having three units of 115 MW.
- Size: The Salal Dam is 130 m high and has an elevation of 1,627 feet above mean sea level.
- Strategic Importance: This was the first hydropower project built by India in Kashmir under the Indus Water Treaty regime.
- Beneficiaries: The Jammu and Kashmir receives 12.5% of the energy generated from the project, while the remaining power is transmitted to the Northern Grid for distribution to Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh.
