News: The Ministry of Defence signed a ₹810.79 crore contract with Bharat Dynamics Limited for 160 SAT-SAAW for the Indian Air Force.
About Satellite Smart Anti-Airfield Weapons (SAT-SAAW)
- SAT-SAAW is an air-to-ground precision-guided glide bomb.
- It is designed to neutralise enemy airfields from a long stand-off range.
- Developed by: The system was indigenously designed and developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
- Key Features of SAT-SAAW:
- Precision Guidance: SAAW uses inertial navigation and signals from satellite systems such as GPS and GLONASS for guidance.
- Range and Weight: It is a 125-kilograms class weapon with an effective range of up to 110 km.
- Target Capability: It can target critical airfield infrastructure, including runways, bunkers, aircraft hangars and hardened aircraft shelters.
- Aircraft Compatibility: It can be launched from Su-30 MKI, Hawk and Jaguar aircraft.
- Indigenous Content: The system will have 60% indigenous content, including the indigenisation of the Initial Measurement Unit, Long Impact Delay Fuse and Twin Store Carrier.
