  1. The government think tank,NITI Aayog dismissed the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) report on unemployment as a draft and not a final report.
  2. The report showed that unemployment rate across the country stood at 6.1 per cent, the highest since 1972-73.It also showed that joblessness was higher in urban India (7.8%) than in rural India (5.3%).
  3. Labour force participation rate(LFPR) – the proportion of population working or seeking jobs – declined to 36.9 percent in 2017-18 from 39.5 percent in 2011-12.
  4. This phenomenon of unemployment rising while the LFPR dipped probably shows that people are simply giving up on finding jobs and have stopped seeking work.
  5. The National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) is the largest organisation in India conducting periodic socio-economic surveys. It comes under the Ministry of Statistics and programme implementation.
