About United States Agency for International Development (USAID)

- The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) is the primary international humanitarian and development agency of the U.S. government.
- It was established in 1961 by President John F. Kennedy through an executive order to implement the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961.
- Its purpose is to provide assistance to strategically important countries, lead US effort to alleviate poverty, disease, and humanitarian need; assist developing countries economic growth.
- USAID Provides assistance to around 130 countries.
- It has over 10,000 employees, with two-thirds stationed overseas, plus additional institutional contractors.
- It works in collaboration with NGOs, foreign governments, international organizations, and U.S. agencies.
