News: The Finance Minister recently introduced a five-year Cotton Mission aimed at improving productivity, sustainability, and the promotion of premium ELS cotton varieties in India.
About Extra-Long Staple (ELS) cotton
- Extra-Long Staple (ELS) cotton is a premium type of cotton known for its extra-long fiber length (30 mm or more), making it softer, stronger, and more durable than regular cotton.
- It is primarily used for high-quality textiles, luxury fabrics, and fine clothing.
- Cotton is categorized based on the length of its fibers:
- Short Staple: Less than 21 mm
- Medium Staple: 25-28.6 mm (Most of India’s cotton is in this category)
- Long Staple: 29-30 mm
- Extra-Long Staple (ELS): 30 mm and above
- ELS cotton, mainly derived from Gossypium barbadense (also known as Egyptian or Pima cotton), is known for its superior quality and strength. It is primarily grown in China, Egypt, Australia, and Peru.
- ELS Cotton is special because:
- Softer and Smoother: It produces premium, high-quality fabrics.
- More Durable: It is a stronger fiber that lasts longer and resists wear and tear.
- Resistant to Pilling: Clothes made from ELS cotton maintain a smooth texture over time.
- High-Quality Appearance: Fabrics made with ELS cotton have a luxurious feel and shine.
