News: The Centre has allowed the export of 25 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) of wheat and 5 LMT of wheat products, easing the export ban that was imposed in May 2022.
About Wheat Cultivation
- Wheat is the second most important cereal crop of India.
- It is the main food crop, in north and north-western part of the country.
- Crop type: Rabi crop
- Climatic conditions required
- Sunlight: It requires a cool growing season and a bright sunshine at the time of ripening.
- Temperature: 10–15 °C at sowing and 21–26 °C at ripening are ideal
- Rainfall: It requires 50 to 75 cm of annual rainfall evenly distributed over the growing season.
- There are two important wheat-growing zones in the country – the Ganga-Satluj plains in the north-west and black soil region of the Deccan.
- Status of India: The world’s second-largest producer of wheat (around 14% of global output) and the country with the largest area under wheat cultivation.
- Largest producing state: Uttar Pradesh, followed by Madhya Pradesh and Punjab.
