News: A member of the World Commission on Protected Areas claim that the Indian government is “rubber-stamping” infrastructure projects without evaluating how they ruin the biodiversity values of specific protected sites.
About World Commission on Protected Areas
- It is one of six technical commissions of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)
- It is the leading global network of experts providing scientific and technical advice on managing and establishing protected lands.
- They actively guide IUCN members, government agencies, and key stakeholders to improve conservation practices worldwide.
- Mandate: It mandates 2026–2029, aligned with the IUCN Programme 2026–2029 and the 20-year Strategic Vision.
- Objective:
- Shape Global Policy: Provide clear definitions and anticipate threats to influence global biodiversity and climate policy, highlighting the value of protected and conserved areas (PCAs).
- Guide Design and Management: Improve the planning, connectivity, management, and monitoring of PCAs to protect nature and deliver solutions for climate, health, and security challenges.
- Support the Workforce: Advocate for frontline workers, including rangers, Indigenous stewards, and protected area staff who maintain these systems.
- Secure Investment: Push for public and private funding, policy support, and capacity building to ensure PCAs are effectively and equitably managed.
- Foster Collaboration: Recognize diverse stakeholders and governance models, promoting collaboration and public appreciation for the benefits of PCAs.
