News: The Tamil Nadu government has locked and sealed 42 illegal resorts and farmhouses operating without permission in the eco-sensitive zone of the Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve.
About Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve
- Location: It is located in Erode District, Tamil Nadu.
- It was declared as the 41st Tiger Reserve in the Country and 4th Tiger Reserve in Tamil Nadu.
- Declaration year: It was declared a tiger reserve in 2013.
- It is contiguous with Mudumalai , BRT (Biligiri Ranganatha Swamy Temple) and Bandipur tiger reserves.
- It is at a confluence of Western Ghats and Eastern Ghats.
- It is also part of Nilgiris Biosphere Reserve & Nilgiris – Eastern Ghats Elephant Reserve.
- River associated: River Bhavani and Moyar flow through the area.
- Tribal communities: It is home to several indigenous tribal communities, predominantly the Soligas, Ooralis (Irulas), Kurumbas, and Paniyas.
- Vegetation: It features a mix of southern tropical dry thorn, deciduous, semi-evergreen, and riparian forests.
- Flora: Common Species of trees and shrubs found are Albizzia amara Chloroxylon swictenia, Gyrocarpus jacquini, Neem, Tamarind, Sandalwood, Randi dumetorum, Zizyphus and associates.
- Fauna: The major species found here are Elephant, Tiger, Panther, Sloth bear, Gaur, Black Buck, Spotted deer, Wild boar.
- It is also home to Black napped hare, Common langur Nilgiri langur, Striped neck mongoose and Bonnet macaque.
