News: The government revived the long-stalled Kirthai-II Hydroelectric Project after placing the Indus Water Treaty in abeyance.
About Kirthai-II Hydroelectric Project
- Location: The project is located on the Chenab River in the Kishtwar district of Jammu and Kashmir.
- River Basin: It is being developed in the Chenab River Basin, which is a major tributary of the Indus River system.
- Implementing Agency: The project is being implemented by Chenab Valley Power Projects Limited (CVPPPL), a joint venture of National Hydroelectric Power Corporation Limited (NHPC) and Jammu and Kashmir State Power Development Corporation (JKSPDC).
- Key Features:
- Run-of-River Scheme: The project is a run-of-river scheme with a planned reservoir capacity of 51.26 million cubic meters.
- Power Generation Capacity: The project has a proposed capacity of 930 MW.
- Dam type: The project is designed with a 121-meter-high concrete gravity dam, a 4.29 km headrace tunnel, an 840 MW underground powerhouse, and a 90 MW dam toe powerhouse.
