About Unjha Jeera
- It belongs to Unjha region, located in Mehsana district, Gujarat.
- It is home to one of Asia’s largest spice markets and serves as a major trading hub for cumin.
- Features:
- It is particularly known for its large seeds, stemless quality and higher essential oil content. .
- It releases a specific earthy aroma when added to tadka.
- Note: India is the world’s largest producer and exporter of cumin, while Gujarat is among the country’s leading cumin-producing states, making Unjha a key centre in the global cumin trade.
- Recognition: It is given a Geographical Indication (G.I.) tag in Gujarat.
- Tussle over G.I. Tag: Rajasthan farmers argue that Unjha is primarily a trading and aggregation centre rather than a major production hub for cumin (jeera).
- Farmers contend that the GI should be linked to the place of production, not merely the place where the crop is marketed.
