News: India and Switzerland signed pacts on mobility that will ease granting longer-duration visas and the exchange of young professionals and agreed to strengthen cooperation.

  • Switzerland is a landlocked country in the central Europe.
  • Bordering nations: It is bordered by France to the west, Germany to the north, Austria and Liechtenstein to the east, and Italy to the south.
  • Capital: Its capital is Bern.
  • Climate: Its climate is influence by four major European air masses –
    • mild, moist Atlantic air
    • cold, dry Arctic air
    • continental air from the east
    • warm, moist Mediterranean air
  • Geography: Its geography can be divided into three distinct regions – the Jura Mountains in the northwest, the Alps in the south and east, and the Mittelland (Central Plateau) lying between them.
    • Mountain ranges:
      • Jura Mountains: The Jura is a rolling mountain range which was formed due to the Alpine folding
      • Alps: The Alps were built of large complexes of massed overthrusts of extremely varied sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous rocks that were shaped by glaciation.
    • Mittelland: The Mittelland (Central Plateau) covers nearly one-fourth of Switzerland and is bounded by mountain ranges and the country’s two largest lakes.
    • Lakes: Lake Geneva and Lake Constance are the two largest lake of the country.
    • Major rivers: The Rhine River, Rhône River, Aare River, Ticino River and Inn River are major rivers of the country.
    • Highest points: Its highest point is Dufourspitze (Monte Rosa), in the Pennine Alps.
