News: The Ministry of Labour and Employment has notified the official constitution of the National Social Security Board for unorganised, gig and platform workers.
About National Social Security Board for Unorganised Workers and Gig & Platform Workers
- The National Social Security Board aims to support social security for unorganized workers, gig workers and platform workers through welfare schemes.
- Nodal Ministry: The Ministry of Labour and Employment is the nodal ministry.
- Legality: The Board is established under the Code on Social Security.
- Governance Structure:
- Chairperson: The Union Minister for Labour and Employment presides over the Board.
- Representation: The Board includes representatives from Central and State Governments, aggregator companies, employers, civil society organisations, workers’ unions and gig and platform associations.
- Meetings: The Board shall meet at least three times a year.
- Key Features:
- Welfare Schemes: The Board recommends suitable schemes for different sections of unorganized, gig and platform workers.
- Policy Advice: It advises the Central Government on matters related to the administration of the Code.
- Monitoring: It monitors Central Government social welfare schemes for these workers.
- Review: It reviews State-level record-keeping functions and expenditure from the fund and account.
- Additional Functions: It performs other functions assigned by the Central Government.
