News: A new study in Udaipur found diverse bacteria, including multidrug-resistant strains, in red-naped ibis faeces.
About Red-naped Ibises
- Red-naped Ibis’ scientific name is Pseudibis papillosa.
- It is commonly known as the Indian Black Ibis.
- Habitat: It prefers drier habitats, including dry agricultural fields, fallow lands and scrub forests, rather than depending strictly on wetlands.
- Distribution: It is widely distributed across the plains of the Indian subcontinent.
- It is common in Rajasthan along the Aravalli mountains.
- Characteristics:
- Appearance: It has a dark body with a bluish-green sheen and a white patch near the shoulder.
- Red nape: It has bright red warts on the crown and nape, which give it its name.
- Bill: It has a long, downcurved bill.
- Diet: It is an opportunistic omnivore that feeds on carrion, insects, frogs, small vertebrates and grain.
- Behaviour: It is usually found singly or in loose groups.
- Activity: It is largely diurnal and roosts communally on trees or islands at night.
- Threats: It may feed at garbage disposal sites, which can expose it to antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
- Conservation Status:
- IUCN Red List: Least Concern
- Wild Life Protection Act: Schedule-II
