About Yenisei River

- The Yenisei river is one of the major Siberian rivers.
- Origin: It is formed by the confluence of the Great Yenisei and Little Yenisei rivers at Kyzyl in Russia.
- The Great Yenisei rises in the Eastern Sayan Mountains, while the Little Yenisei rises in Mongolia.
- Course: It flows mainly northwards through Russia and empties into the Kara Sea, part of the Arctic Ocean.
- Basin: Its basin is the fifth largest in the world, and it is the largest among the major Siberian rivers.
- Major Tributaries: The Angara, Stony Tunguska and Lower Tunguska are important tributaries that contribute substantially to the river’s flow.
- Ecological Significance: Its waters support fishes such as Siberian sturgeon, sterlet and Arctic char.
- Its lower reaches and delta also provide habitats for ducks, geese, swans and muskrats.
- The upper basin is connected to Lake Baikal, the world’s deepest and oldest lake.
- Environmental Pollution: Industrial activities and river regulation contribute to pollution, making the lower reaches among the most polluted Arctic river sections.
