News: The Standing Committee of the National Board for Wildlife (SC-NBWL) recommended wildlife clearance for the Panari Pumped Storage Project in the Panna–Ranipur Tiger Corridor.
About Panari Hydropower Project

- Location: The project is located in Satna and Panna districts of Madhya Pradesh.
- Objective: The project aims to develop a Pumped Storage Project (PSP) by using water from the Baghain River for recirculating power generation.
- The project lies within the Panna–Ranipur Tiger Corridor, which connects Panna Tiger Reserve with Ranipur Tiger Reserve.
- Capacity: The project has a proposed capacity of 1,800 MW (16,200 MWh) with 9-hour storage capacity.
- Water Source: It will utilize the water from the nearby Baghain River.
- Conservation Measures: The proposal includes wildlife overpasses, wildlife underpasses, box culverts, road realignment, a ₹41 crore Wildlife Conservation Plan, and a ₹49.95 crore Catchment Area Treatment Plan.
About Baghain River
- Origin: The river originates from Panna Hill in Panna (Vindhyan Supergroup) in Madhya Pradesh.
- Course: It flows through the Bundelkhand plateau and marginal/central Ganga plains.
- Confluence: The river joins the Yamuna River near Chilla village in Banda district, Uttar Pradesh.
- Geological Significance: The basin includes the Bundelkhand Gneissic Complex, Vindhyan Supergroup, and alluvial deposits.
- It also shows lithological variation, moderate basin elongation, and moderate to highly permeable and easily erodible alluvial terrain.
- Biodiversity: The river basin lies within the Panna–Ranipur Tiger Corridor, which supports the movement of tigers, leopards, dholes, wolves, sloth bears, gaurs, sambars, and chitals.
